Safety/Hiking Tips
We suggest water, sturdy shoes and/or hiking shoes, a cell phone, sunscreen, and bug spray for each hike. Please note that mountain weather can be unpredictable; carrying a rain jacket or extra layers for warmth is also suggested.
We highly suggest downloading the free app AllTrails before beginning the puzzle trail. While we will provide logistical information for each hike, AllTrails can often provide information about current trail conditions.
Please prioritize your own safety and do not hike or travel in conditions you feel are unsafe; there is no time limit on the PPT.
The majority of the PPT takes place outdoors, surrounded by nature. You may encounter all sorts of wildlife, from birds and smaller critters (such as our infamous white squirrels!) to snakes and bears. Never approach or feed wildlife and always exercise caution around wild animals!
Generally, parks and forests within North Carolina permit pets, provided they are leashed and under control at all times. If you plan on bringing a furry friend with you, please take time to familiarize yourself with park ordinances.
Most state parks and national forests have a carry-in/carry-out policy regarding trash and a general “take nothing, leave nothing” approach to conservation. Please be excellent stewards of our outdoor spaces by following the guidelines for each park.
